We had an objective this year to improve guidance on detecting to everyone already in the hobby and those considering starting. Our videos covered everything from the basic rules (our Code of Conduct) through to treasure laws and what to do in the event of finding something archeologically significant. We also provided advice on what to do and who to call in the event of finding human remains or something dangerous like a bomb.
Adding to the videos, we’ve been working on a leaflet that summarises this advice. Our members will have, or will be receiving a copy in the latest version of Digging Deep. In addition we are delighted to announce that most detector retailers will be including the leaflet with their future orders. Copies will also be distributed by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, via Operation Chronos to rural police crime teams, in the hobby press, and by the NCMD at events we attend.
If you get more than 1 copy please share them with your detecting friends and make sure everyone has a copy!
In total over 60,000 leaflets have or will be distributed in the next 12 months.
We’d like to express our thanks to the retailers and hobby press for supporting this initiative and ensuring everyone, especially those new to the hobby, are educated on the laws and best practice around our detecting. So thank you (in alphabetical order) to:
Crawfords, Detecnicks, MDO online, Northern Ireland Metal Detectors, Pepsi Piros, Regton, Treasure Hunting magazine, Spin a Disc and Unearthed UK for your amazing support.
