Find Title:
Medieval Corpus Christi
Please add a description of your find, add as much detail as possible.:
A cast copper alloy Corpus Christi from a church processional crucifix. Weight 120g, length 130mm, width 89mm. The style is "Christus Triumphans" where Christ is depicted as alive and victorius as opposed to "Christus Patiens" where he is suffering and dying, emancipated and slumped. This suggests an earlier date of late 12th to 13th Century. The object was found at a depth of 50cm (20"). A common explanation for similar finds is that they were buried by Catholics at the reformation when such idolatrous objects were removed and destroyed. The find location was 800m from a church at the top of a small hill. I have have an appointment with the FLO to record the item.
