12th century belt plate

When found this 12th century belt plate, with some rivets still intact, was caked in hard mud so it wasn't until it was gently cleaned at home that some beautiful details came to light. On the field it seemed like a thin bit of copper with little detail. It is amazing that so much of the enamel has survived along with remnants of the gold gilding. How colourful and special this item must have been back in the day. It will be put forward to the PAS for recording on the database soon. Dr Adrian Marsden has seen it at my local club meeting and described the design as "pseudo heraldic".
