Roman harness toggle or strap guide
Please add a description of your find, add as much detail as possible. Also include the PAS reference number where possible, if it has been added to the database.:
Dating roughly from the 1st to 2nd century AD. The Loop: The heavy-duty, cast rectangular loop on the back was designed to be permanently slotted through a slit in a thick leather strap (like a horse's bridle or breastplate) or held in place by a retaining pin/washer. The "Button" / Pendant: The lower discoid, slightly cupped section would have functioned as a toggle or a decorative pendant hanging down from the junction where two leather straps met. The Style: The combination of a trefoil/lobed head with ring-and-dot stamps alongside a teardrop or circular terminal is a classic Celtic-influenced Roman design (often associated with auxiliary cavalry equipment found across Britain and the northern frontier).
